Questions
What are the MTD quarterly deadlines?
7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. They are the same whether you use standard update periods (6 April to 5 April) or calendar update periods (1 April to 31 March).
What does each quarterly update cover?
Each update is a running total from the start of the tax year to the end of that period. The third standard update, for example, covers 6 April to 5 January.
Can I send an update early?
Yes, any time after the period ends, up to and including the deadline. GOV.UK also lets you send up to 10 days before the period ends if you do not expect any more transactions.
What if I had no income in a quarter?
You must still send the update to tell HMRC, even with no income or expenses for the period.
When is the tax return due?
By 31 January after the end of the tax year, for example 31 January 2028 for the 2026 to 2027 tax year. Your tax bill is due on the same date.
Can I switch to calendar periods?
Only before you send your first quarterly update of the tax year. Your software is set to standard periods by default. GOV.UK says to use calendar periods if your accounting period runs 1 April to 31 March.
Dates for later years follow the fixed pattern on GOV.UK: send quarterly updates (checked 27 October 2026). GOV.UK lists the dates as they are and does not say they move when they fall on a weekend.
